Negative Marking Formula

Final Score = (Correct x Marks per Correct) - (Wrong / Ratio x Deduction per wrong)

Example: 70 correct, 15 wrong, 1 mark each, UPSC pattern (4 wrong = 1 mark off):

Final Score = (70 x 1) - (15 / 4 x 1) = 70 - 3.75 = 66.25

What is negative marking?

Negative marking is a penalty system in competitive exams where marks are deducted for wrong answers to discourage guessing. For example in UPSC, every 4 wrong answers deduct 1 mark from your score.

Which exams use negative marking?

UPSC (1/4), SSC CGL (1/2), NEET (1 per wrong), JEE Main (1 per wrong), Banking PO (1/4), Railway NTPC (1/3) and many state-level exams all use negative marking.

Should I attempt a question I am unsure about?

If you are more than 75-80% confident, attempt it. If unsure, skipping is safer. With UPSC 1/4 pattern, you need 4 correct answers to recover the mark lost from 1 wrong answer.

Do unattempted questions affect my score?

No. Skipped or unattempted questions are neither rewarded nor penalized. Only wrong answers cause mark deductions.

Can I set custom negative marking ratio?
