The average menstrual cycle is 28 days but normally ranges from 21 to 35 days. Day 1 is the first day of your period. Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period — not necessarily on day 14, especially for irregular cycles. After ovulation, the egg is viable for only 12-24 hours, but sperm can survive for 3-5 days, creating a fertile window of about 6 days.
Your body gives several signals during ovulation: Cervical mucus changes to a clear, stretchy, egg-white consistency. Basal body temperature (BBT) rises slightly (0.2-0.5°C) after ovulation. Mild pelvic pain (mittelschmerz) on one side. Breast tenderness may increase. LH surge detectable with OPK (ovulation predictor kit) strips 24-36 hours before ovulation.
The highest pregnancy probability is during the 2-3 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. Having intercourse every 1-2 days throughout the fertile window maximizes conception chances.
